Philippines entry in top 3 of BBC World Challenge 2010

The Lone Philippine entry,  A hydraulic ram pump-  has been voted one of the three top winners of the BBC World Challenge 2010 competition among 12 finalists worldwide. Winners will be announce November 29,2010 and broadcast in the Philippines on BBC World News at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on December 4.

Auke Idzenga a Dutchman who's been living in the Philippines for 25 years and The Alternative Indigenous Development Foundation Inc. (AIDFI)  hydraulic ram pump project, called “The Only Way is Up,” does not use fuel to spur it into action but uses instead the kinetic energy of the river. Custom-made from door hinges, car tires, pipes, and steel, the AIDFI pump model which was invented by Idzenga.

In the mountains of the Philippines, over 50 000 people already receive running water which is brought to them by the Ram Pumps of AIDFI (an NGO created by Auke and his partners). Although this seems miraculous, it's worth remembering that this was a method of pumping water which was invented at a time when oil didn't exist as an energy source. Thanks to the dedicated work of Auke Idzenga, this invention is working today to bring running water to people who would never otherwise have the financial means to pay for it, if it had to pumped using costly energy sources. source : http://www.theworldchallenge.co.uk
