Halo-halo (from Tagalog word halo, "mix") is derived popular Filipino dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice and milk to which are added various boiled sweet beans and fruits, and served cold in a tall glass or bowl.There is no specific recipe for this dessert, and a wide variety of ingredients are used.
Just like its favorite Dessert, Filipinos are a mixture of different things. from its People to its culture.

Brain is a major organ of the central nervous system, controlling all bodily activities. It is divided down in the middle into two sides. These sides are called the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere

It was late afternoon when a woman in office attire accompanied by her female co-worker arrived at the ER. The patient, a deadringer for Diana Zubiri, looked pale and drowsy. Her face was in noticeable pain as she was holding on to her stomach.
"Doc, kanina pa ho kasi sumasakit ang tiyan, namumutla na nga. Muntik pang mahimatay nung pauwi kami," the co-worker initially remarked.
The patient was immediately examined. BP was 80/50. Pale palpebral conjunctiva, cold clammy skin and tender hypogastric area were evident. She was quickly hooked to IV fluids.
"Grabe lang ho siguro buhos ng mens ko. Kung maari po pagkatapos ko masweruhan, resetahan nyo na lang ako't uuwi na ho ko," the patient reiterated.
"Teka, di ganun kadali yun, kelangan muna natin ng mga tests at i-IE pa kita," I responded.
Upon hearing the word "IE" (internal exam), the patient suspiciously looked like a troubled kid whose tooth is to be extracted by a dentist.
Upon IE, passage of blood and meaty tissue were noted. Cervix is conspicuously soft and dilated.
On a physician's clinical eye, the patient exhibited the classic picture of someone who just underwent an abortion----the bleeding, the acute abdomen, the cervical ripening and the patient in denial of her ordeal.
"Siguradong di ka buntis at nagpalaglag, misis? Kelangan kasi magsabi ka nang totoo para magamot ka nang tama," I explained to her.
Yet still, the patient denied, insisting persistently she was just having a menorrhagia (abnormal heavy and long menstrual flow.)
As per protocol, patient was subjected to pregnancy test. I had to insert a catheter to extract urine for the said test, for the patient was too weak to voluntarily void her urine.
The test was positive.
"Misis, umamin ka na kasing nagpalaglag ka!" vehemently interjected by our feisty ER nurse who happens to have a type A personality and is notorious for her Matutina-like demeanor.
Faced with such overwhelming physical evidence, the patient remained steadfastly quiet and just exhibited a poker face.
At that point, I felt like Jack Bauer of 24 confronting a captive terrorist who is stubbornly hesitant in divulging a pertinent information.
The patient's mother finally arrived. She frantically asked, "Anong nangyari sa anak ko?"
I have no course but to tell the mother of the real deal, "Mukhang nagpalaglag ho anak nyo pero ayaw umamin. Baka puwede nyo hong kausapin. Mahirap ho kasi sa pasyente pag di nagko-cooperate."
Upon getting the info, the mother suddenly looked dumbfoundedly astonished, as if a gun was held up against her at point blank.
Seeing "single' at the patient' chart, I then curiously asked, "May boyfriend o kinakasama po ba ang pasyente?"
The mother replied in her rattled voice, "Dalawang taon na hong nasa abroad yung mister ng anak ko."
I almost succumbed to an Ang TV moment and nearly uttered the catchphrase "Niyeeh!"
The dust was starting to settle. With the husband out of the country, it was either divine intervention or some other guy pulled a bantay salakay stunt and knocked the patient up. Obviously, it was the latter.
The mother angrily confronted her daughter. I could not help but overhear their conversation (ok...ok..I eavesdropped.)
"Ano bang ginagawa mo sa buhay mo, anak?!" the sobbing mother uttered as she stomped her foot in disgust.
"Buntis ka daw at nagpalaglag sabi ng doktor. Sabihin mo nang totoo, nanay mo ko," the mother continued.
The patient broke down into tears and finally admitted her deed.
"Sinong ama? Si ________ (some guy's name that the mom probably knew)?" the lamenting mother interrogated.
The patient nodded in affirmation as she wiped her tears with a hanky.
"Sabi ko na nga ba. Ilang beses na kitang pinagsasasbihan!" the mother sorrowfully scorned her daughter.
"Diyus ku pu, Lord!!!" yelled by the mother who highly reminded me of the panicking troublesome "Pris di Lurd" antics of Aling Dionisia (Manny Pacquiao's mom) as seen on a tv news coverage whenever there were a Pacquiao fight.
Apparently, the patient was a G2P1 who terminated her pregnancy by taking Misoprostol (Cytotec-an abortifacient) orally and vaginally. She then experienced a crampy abdominal pain and continuous vaginal bleeding thereafter. The pregnancy was a result of an extra-marital affair.
Upon referral to my OB-Gyn consultant, patient was admitted. D & C (dilatation and curettage-in Filipino, raspa) was done. Blood transfusion was administered. She was discharged four days after.
As the Soul Asylum song goes, "they say misery loves company." During her OFW husband's absence, the patient was lured into infidelity. And that infidelity resulted into a stoic casualty--the killing of an unborn child. True love was what the mother claimed her daughter has for the father of her aborted child for he was a kababata. Whatever it may be, people should be responsible for every action they take. In this case, the patient was not. I cannot help but aimlessly wonder what would be in store for her relationship with the OFW husband once he knows.
Doctors can read charts but we cannot read minds. It's a bummer that clinicians do encounter patients that are elusive despite having a threat to their well-being. Covering up for an infamous and shameful act is indeed human nature, even in the face of a life and death situation.
During the time when the patient was packing her things up as she was up for discharge, I jokingly and satirically confronted her.
"Misis next time magsasabi ka na nang totoo kung buhay na ang nakasalalay. Sabi mo nireregla ka lang. Parang ako ang niregla sa yo eh."

Lucasfilm Animation has crafted a movie nicely tucked in to Anakin's early heroic days, before his transformation into the evil Darth Vader. Along for the ride are noble-hearted clone soldiers with the camaraderie of Marine grunts, inept android warriors as idiotic as the Three Stooges and a young protege who rivals Anakin for cockiness and affectionately calls him "Sky Guy."
Dave Filoni, director of the movie, said the idea was to return to the wisecracking tone of the original Star Wars in 1977, before the gloom of Anakin's fall. "I wanted this to have the banter. I wanted this to be funny," he shared. "Telling that dark story of Anakin Skywalker was important for George, but this was a chance to show Anakin before that. Anakin as a hero, Anakin as the good guy, Anakin more like his son, Luke Skywalker, of the original trilogy."
The Anakin in Clone Wars is a hybrid of Luke and his rascally ally, Han Solo, Filoni said. "He's cocky like Han, he can do a lot of things like Han, he's clever with machines like Han. But he's naive like Luke. The whole galaxy is a bit overwhelming," Filoni said.
The movie presents all of the key characters from Anakin's world: Jedi masters Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu and Yoda; Anakin's future wife Padme Amidala; androids R2-D2 and C-3PO; gangster Jabba the Hutt; villain Count Dooku; and Palpatine, the galaxy's evil emperor in waiting.
Characters not seen in the live-action movies include conniving assassin Asajj Ventress; Jabba's sinister uncle, a giant slug that speaks with a Truman Capote-like Southern drawl; and Captain Rex, a loyal member of Anakin's clone crew.
The main newcomer is Ahsoka Tano, a teenage girl from an exotic alien species who's assigned as Anakin's Jedi apprentice. With mischievous wit, Ahsoka breaks down Anakin's stiff facade and reluctance to take on a student, the two establishing a flippant rapport as they slice up droids with their light-sabers, scale a daunting summit on a rescue mission and play nursemaid to Jabba's kidnapped baby son.
"She definitely brings a fun side out of Anakin. I think they have such a great relationship," said Ashley Eckstein, who provides Ahsoka's voice. "Ahsoka is very eager to prove herself, and I don't think she would allow Anakin not to accept her."
The movie offers a glimpse of the inner turmoil that contributes to Anakin's turn to the dark side. Crash-landing on his home planet of Tatooine, Anakin momentarily bears a haunted look as he's asked about the desert world, where he exacted a savage revenge over the death of his mother in Attack of the Clones. "I was hoping I'd never have to lay eyes on this dustball again," says Anakin.
Opening with a variation on John Williams' familiar Star Wars theme, the movie is heavy on humor. Anakin devises an amusing low-tech way for him and Ahsoka to sneak inside a droid energy shield. Obi-Wan engages in a witty surrender negotiation with a general who speaks in a Sean Connery brogue. When a droid falls off a cliff and smashes on the ground, his superior leans over and barks: "Get back here, sergeant."
A few veteran Star Wars performers provide voices for the movie, including Samuel L. Jackson as Mace, Christopher Lee as Dooku and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO. Taking over from Hayden Christensen as the voice of Anakin is Matt Lanter, while James Arnold Taylor does Obi-Wan, who was played by Ewan McGregor in the prequel trilogy.
Anakin remains a bit rash, but he has graduated from apprenticeship to Obi-Wan to take the lead on his own missions as an equal to his former master. "With this movie and also the ongoing series, we're going to see the banter between Obi-Wan and Anakin. We're going to see them as comrades, as buddies," Lanter said. "It is reminiscent of some of the original Star Wars. It's got that comic relief in it and has kind of that old-school feeling."
Lucas initially planned just a TV show. But as he viewed the first footage, he said, "This looks great. The fans should really see this on the big screen," said Filoni, who came to Clone Wars after working on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Filoni and his collaborators reshaped a story arc developed for the series into a stand-alone tale they could tell as a theatrical movie.
The computer animation borrows from the striking panoramas of Japanese anime, while the characters have a chiseled look and movements vaguely reminiscent of the 1960s puppet adventure series Thunderbirds.
Though animated, the world is recognizably Star Wars, from Yoda's twitching frowns to the hum of the light-sabers.
"A lot of people have said to me that have seen it—well, the few people that have seen it at this point—that they feel like they're watching Star Wars," Filoni said. "They feel like they're seeing those characters again. Even though we've done this style that's painterly, if you want to call it that, it's still Star Wars."
Opening across the Philippines today, August 20, Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be distributed worldwide in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

The 2008 State of the Nation address was met with much criticism from the opposition, going further in calling it a “feel good speech” that failed to outline what she intends to do to solve the countries’ pressing problems. In reality, I really do think people are ignorant about things and fail to realize what is really happening to country and why.
She opened the SONA with economic numbers, championing the economic growth of the country today was an all-time high for many decades, but anti-government expresses sentiments that these are numbers that cannot be felt by the poor and the hungry.
Yes, I do believe that this is not a time to be bragging about this things, but can we blame her for this? In a country that only sees the worst and fails to see the good, who can blame her for giving her side of the story. Numbers don’t lie, and I believe that everyone have noticed the increasing power of the Peso, from P54+ that had gown down to P40, an all-time high for years now in spite of global economic pressures that has besiege the world. Inflation rates are in its lowest, Annual GDP growth rates that have risen far beyond any president had ever for generations. But people fail to see all of these things, reasoning that these numbers will not feed them and are not even felt at all.
I do believe that only reason why have not plummeted down into a recession is because of this numbers. People have not realized of the what ifs that might have happen to our country if not because of her. The economic worlds is crunching and were not the only one who is feeling the pressure, but given these situations, she has managed to sustain, if not even raise our economic level to a point that we have grown where all other countries have fallen. If people are not ignorant about these things, I do believe that people would not be too harsh on her.
She championed the eVAT and it’s important in sustaining our country’s economic activities and even goes further and immaculating it as our ticket to away from poverty, but the masses just frown taxes as pahirap sa bayan and burdens for them because they fail to realize that taxes is the lifeblood of our country. The funds that the country spend on its project comes from taxes, and generating additional taxes will more likely to generate additional funds for the government to spend to the people.
Self-suffiency on rice is also one of the points she have made, stating the even though are land is not as fertile as our neighboring countries are we have made innovations that has made our country not fully dependent on the rice exports of other countries. But the people doesn’t give much regards to that, stating the long lines in waiting for NFA rices are enough to prove that rice shortage is rampant in our country. The truth of the matter is that when we have sufficient rice available, no one bothered to buy NFA rice because of its quality compared to other commercial rice, so when prices skyrocketed people shifted to the much cheaper rice to eat. You don’t need to be a genius to see that instantaneous shifting of a great number of demand to a commodity that people in the past doesn’t buy will really exhaust the supply because of the pressure of the buyers.
I do agree that poverty is still the no. 1 problem in our country and her efforts are not enough to eradicate it, but I do thinks that’s why she is boosting her efforts on other problems that she can solve, like the Land Reforms she initiated and the Health Care programs that are not a priority but are also needed by the people. I honestly believe that erasing poverty from a third world country is not a menial task that should be taken lightly, its is a long and slow battle and she cannot defeat it all in 10 year term, I believe no one can in that span of time, but she’s trying and that’s what’s important.
But people crucify her as if she is the one possible for all the misfortunes that is happening to the country. If I was the one carrying the burden off all our country and the people I serve sees me bad no matter what I do, what would you think I would do? That’s why I admire her, because she makes all the tough decisions, risking her popularity in the process, stating that no matter what she does, she will still be unpopular anyway.
I do believe that crab mentality isn’t the real problem of our people anymore, its finger pointing and scape-goating. People see our President as the scapegoat for all the things that is happening to our country because it’s easier that way. They can vent out all their anger to her. But let us stop for a while and think, would blaming her for the problems, regardless if she did it or not, would solve the problem in the first place? Would blaming Gloria now rollback the prices of gasoline? Would blaming Gloria for all the crises that Filipinos are facing would solve them? I dont think so.
The President isn’t the who is earning for the family or studying college to get a brighter future, it US. No matter how hard life it might seems, if we struggle and work for it, we will see greener pastures eventually like in the old filipino saying “pagkatapos ng hirap ay sarap”. If we only open our eyes and to study carefully both sides of the stoy, the President and her Sona would be as bad as you think it was.
